Four Letter Domains Are Gold

On November 2nd, 2007, all of the potential four letter .COM domain names in existence were registered. The craze for purchasing four letter domain names has been around since the earliest times of domain name investing, and hundreds of individuals saw the massive gains, and losses, that occur with any type of hyped-up demand for a product. Surprisingly, not every four letter domain name is a completed word. In fact, many are simply random letter combinations that were registered and re-sold countless of times.

The element that makes four letter domain names worth big bucks is that they are extremely versatile and useful. Regardless of whether you are a domainer purchasing a four letter domain to resell, build an affiliate site on, or use to create a thriving blog, the fact that it is four letters makes it extremely valuable in the eyes of other domain name investors. Exactly how valuable are we talking about? In September of 1999, Wine.com sold for a whopping 2.9 Million dollars. That was before the millennium, and I am willing to bet that the record breaking domain name sales in the coming years will consist of four letter domain names.

The most interesting aspect of four letter domain names is that they nearly always retain their value. Because they are valued so highly by domain name investors, their prices continue to skyrocket even if they have no website to sit on. As far as investing in the domain name aftermarket goes, four letter domains have the highest amount of perceived and inflated value. Unfortunate for those of us who have yet to purchase one, and a lucky blessing for those who have a few to sell.
